Blue Collar
A downloadable larp
Blue Collar is a tabletop/larp hybrid game about the loneliness of the working man. It is about the struggle to connect in the breakroom or the nod of a head that replaces a conversation. And it is about the heavy, invisible walls we build around ourselves to get the job done.
In this game, you inhabit the lives of men who work everyday jobs that are long hours, mostly alone. Explore the struggle for masculine integrity that often has no outlet for connection.
Struggle
Many spend more time with our coworkers than our families. Blue Collar plays with that strange situation of where we reach out to connect and share our stress:
- Mechanics focus on judgment, especially how we deal with our daily problems.
- You will navigate men's lives, and play with masculine silence to maintain the world around you.
- Through play, you will face "Upsets"—moments where the mask slips. You must decide: do you offer an apology, do you make an excuse, do you compromise, Or react with violence? And then judgement will come, your own and others.
Isolation
The design of Blue Collar reflects this sometimes solitary existence. Featuring high-contrast, archival imagery of solitary workers, the book serves as a mirror to the characters:
- The game highlights the maintenance man in the empty hallway, the guard in the midnight doorway—men who are essential but overlooked.
- Unique "Silence Instructions" guide the Facilitator and players through moments of forced reflection, mimicking the long, quiet hours of a shift where the only company you have is your own thoughts.
What is Inside
- A System of Emotional Endurance: Rules that prioritize the internal landscape of the worker over external action.
- Landscape Character Sheets: Designed with intentional "white space" to represent the emptiness of the workday, providing room for players to track their character's slow erosion or their rare moments of repair.
- Guidance for the Facilitator: Instructions on how to manage the tension of "the unspoken" and how to frame the "Horizon" of a life lived for others.
To Work is to be Alone
This is a game for those who want to tell stories about the men working every day jobs and a particular masculine view of that life. It is about the struggle to remain a whole human being when your environment treats you as a tool.
